purple moon - blog tour

Tessa and I met over Blogger several years ago. I was so inspired by her story and her passion for writing. I think it is amazing that she has published her first book and I am completely honored to have been a very small part of the process. If you haven't gotten a hold of Purple Moon now is the time to check it out! There are links below.

Tessa Emily Hall is a 19-year-old author of Purple Moon, her YA Christian fiction novel to be published September 2013 by Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. She is also the editor over the faith department for Temperance Magazine, a column writer for Whole Magazine, a contributing writer for More To Be, as well as the PR for God of Moses Entertainment. Other than writing, Tessa enjoys acting, music, Starbucks, and her Teacup Shih Tzu—who is named Brewer after a character in her book, as well as her love for coffee.

Selena's life isn't turning out to be the fairy tale she imagined as a kid. That hope seemed to vanish long ago when her dad kicked her and her mom out of the house. This summer might finally hold the chance of a new beginning for Selena ... but having to live with her snobby cousin in Lake Lure, NC while waiting for her mom to get out of rehab wasn't how Selena was planning on spending her summer. She soon begins to wonder why she committed to give up her "bad habits" for this.

Things don't seem too bad, though. Especially when Selena gains the attention of the cute neighbor next door. But when her best friend back home in Brooklyn desperately needs her, a secret that's been hidden from Selena for years is revealed, and when she becomes a target for one of her cousin's nasty pranks, she finds herself having to face the scars from her past and the memories that come along with them. Will she follow her mom's example in running away, or trust that God still has a fairy tale life written just for her?

My Middle & High School Experience
Guest Post by Tessa
I’m not sure how or why I came up with Selena’s backstory. Because when I think about it, it is almost completely nothing like my middle and high school experience.
I’ve always been a bit different from others my age. I’ve never been one to follow to the crowd (hence the reason I decided to pursue writing early). I didn’t realize exactly how different I was until I reached sixth grade.
All of my friends started separating into cliques, wearing makeup, and getting boyfriends. I was still just a kid who thought the drama that all of my old friends created was silly. I didn’t want to be part of that. And because of that, sixth grade was not easy for me. I felt very alone during this time, and it wasn’t worth it to me to fit in with the crowd just so I could have friends.

After months of begging, my mom decided to pull me out of school and homeschool me in March of that year.
I switched schools in seventh grade and attended the Christian school, which is where my mom was the art teacher. Since I already knew some of the kids who would be in my grade—not to mention, the fact that the school was much smaller than the public school I’d attended—I thought it was going to be a perfect fit for me.
Of course, I loved this school far better than the public school. And the beginning of the year was amazing. But after a couple of months, things started to change. The class separated into cliques, which left me feeling very out of place.
Eighth grade was by far my favorite year of middle school. My sister’s ex-boyfriend’s little sister, Mickey—whom I’d been friends with in a Christian Youth Theater—joined our class. She and I became closer than we ever were and hit it off immediately. We also started hanging out with two other guys in our class—one of the guys I’d known for a long time from church, and another one who eventually became my first boyfriend later that school year.

The only thing that I didn’t like about eighth grade was the competitive cheerleading squad I was on. Although I did love the cheering and competing part, I barely had any friends on the squad. And that was hard, especially since there were so many practices. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t be like the rest of them, why I had to be so quiet and not into the things that they were into. However, I really believe that experience stretched me, and I am very thankful that my mom didn’t pull me out of the squad like I’d wanted her too. I learned a lot about striving toward a goal and sticking with it, no matter what.
I had been planning on going back to the Christian school for high school. However, that summer I found out that Mickey’s mom was going to homeschool her the next year. Coincidentally, it was also during that time when someone told my mom about a new online school. Although I had been looking forward to going back to school, I suddenly had a huge desire to do the online school. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to pursue my acting and writing dreams.
Ninth grade flew by—and that summer is when I decided to take my writing more seriously.
Once I started 10th grade, I enrolled in a Christian Writers Guild course, took a creative writing class on my online school, began reading several YA Christian fiction books, and studied the craft of writing via several industry blogs.
I began writing the first version of “Purple Moon” when I was fifteen, but changed it and finished the first draft when I was sixteen. The reason I wanted to be published so young wasn’t so that I could have fame, success, and attention, but simply because I wanted to put my differences to good use.
Caption: With my mom at my first writer’s conference in 10th grade, which is where I met my soon-to-be publisher. =)
During my high school years, I continued to hang out with Mickey, participate in Christian Youth Theater, hang out with my cousins, and went to youth group. By the time my senior year rolled around, I decided to go back to the Christian school so I could graduate with a class.
Memories of middle school immediately came back. Not just because I was in classes with some of the same people as before, but because—once again—I felt entirely different from them. But I didn’t let it bother me. Instead, I accepted it. And by that time, I already had a publishing contract, as well as a boyfriend that I started dating the summer before. So naturally, I didn’t feel as lonely as I did in middle school. School was only three and a half hours a day for seniors anyway. I could handle it.
Caption: My senior picture.
However, when they played a slideshow of the year at our graduation ceremony, I realized that I was hardly in any of the pictures. Several people in my grade were crying watching the slideshow because they were having to say goodbye—but for me, I wanted to cry because I hadn’t made any memories or friends worth saying goodbye to. I hadn’t even gone on the senior trip, only because I didn’t feel like I was close enough to anyone for it to be worth the amount of money. (I also wanted to save money for my writing conference.)
In middle school, my mom told me that God said I was going to use what I’d been experiencing to relate to others through the books that I’d write. I held onto that hope for years. And rather than getting frustrated at God for making me different, I trusted that He was going to put it to good use one day.
The point of sharing this with all of you? So that you can have that same hope, so you can also trust that God is going to also use your differences for good use.
Now that high school is over, I have a feeling that I will be doing this for the rest of my life: writing books for teens and pre-teens, for people who might be going through the same things I’ve experienced. If all of those lonely seasons were for that purpose only—so I could relate to other teens, minister God’s love, and show them that they are not alone—then it was worth it. Definitely worth it.

ketchup

Hello all!

Ag!  It's been a while.  I'm feeling a catch up post coming on...

I am a college student.  Anybody else out there experiencing full time college for the first time?  Mind blowing!  Some days I'll get home and not have hardly any homework and get to read all day long.  "College life is amazing!"  Then other days I'll have tons of things to do in a day and a half on top of my job.  "Panic attack!"  But overall, I'm really enjoying my college career.  Anatomy and Physiology is tough.  I'm in love with my English class.  And I get lots of exercise walking from class to class and then to my car.  Today I got a really good parking spot and I felt like doing a happy dance.

I just finished reading an amazing book.  It's called Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell. Wow.  It is incredibly thought provoking.  It's a Christian Non-Fiction and talks about repainting the Christian faith.  I definitely recommend it....but to those who are really grounded in your faith.  It touches on some major topics.

Still crazy about Doctor Who.  My sister and I actually redecorated our bathroom into a Doctor Who theme.  *grins*  I'm in the middle of season three now.  And, I'll try not to ruin it for anyone watching it currently, but the end of season two was probably one of the saddest things I have ever watched.  I cried.  And it took me a good while to move onto season three.  But, I'm okay now!  I'm getting used to Martha...she's nice.  Different.  But nice.

If you would, take a moment and click on this link here.  Walking on Sonshine is my best friend's newly established blog.  I'll love you forever if you'll go check it out.  It's pretty great!

October Baby comes out on dvd today.  I saw it in theaters and thought it was just splendid.  I'm very tempted to go out and buy it.  I might, just might, go do it...then I can have a movie night tonight.

Before I close this post and hit the 'publish' button, I wanted to take moment to say something about today, 9/11.  It's been eleven years.  I pray that we all remember that tragic day and the lessons it taught us as a country.  I also pray for the grieving families out there that lost loved ones in the attacks.  You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Blessings to you all!  Have a super fantastic day.

through my window

If I wait too long to live my dream, I may find that it's too heavy.  But if I start now, day by day, every day, someday people may marvel at how much I can carry.

Persuasion

To recap, my brother Zach and I decided one of our projects for the remainder of the year was going to be to read all six of Jane Austen's novels.  We created our own, two person book club.  The Jane Austen Book Club.

"Persuasion" was our first pick.  My pick, actually.  I was pretty excited to read this one.  I'd heard good things about it.  Zach and I had our book discussion just today and we bantered about different things that I thought I'd share with you.  Feel free to answer any of the questions in a comment of your own if you've read the book and wish to join in.  If you haven't read the book, then I forewarn you here and now.  There are spoilers ahead.

Favorite character?
K: Anne.  Okay, I know, she was the main character.  But she was pretty awesome, you've got to admit.  So calm and collected even though she was surrounded by chaos nearly all the time.
Z: Captain Wentworth.

Least favorite character?
K: Mary.  She drove me batty most of the book.  I found her really very selfish and ready to push off any responsibility (including her children) onto Anne or some other willing soul as soon as she got the chance.
Z: Sir Walter.  He didn't even like his own daughter!  His only concern was his wealth and making a name for himself in society.

What makes the book different than other works of Austen?
We haven't read many of her other books but we've seen several movies.  We noticed that in this one Anne is older.  She's nearly 30 and not in her prime, unlike other characters in Austen's books.

Favorite scene/thing?
K: Forgiveness towards Lady Russell.  When Anne and Captain Wentworth were engaged the first time, Lady Russell was the one who advised Anne against it.  In the long run, it was the wrong advice to give.  But Anne didn't hold that lost time against her.  Lady Russell was Anne's best friend in the book.
Z: Anne was lacking a mother figure and didn't have all that great of a father and yet she was still so polite and just an all around great young lady.  She was her own person, and though she did take advice from others, she didn't let any one control her.

Least favorite scene/thing?
K: The conversation with Mrs. Smith over the character of Mr. Elliot.  Mrs. Smith's part of this conversation just didn't sit right with me.  The first thing that pops out of her mouth about Mr. Elliot when she thinks Anne is engaged to him is selfish.  Instead of having Anne's well being at heart and warning her right off about Mr. Elliot's character, it was all about what she might gain.
Z: The ending.  Of course I liked that Anne and Wentworth got together in the end, but I wish Austen had written dialogue instead of narrating their walk together.

Thoughts on Mr. Elliot...
We both thought that Austen might have had a twist in the book and have Anne end up with Mr. Elliot.  Though neither of us wanted it.  We were slightly surprised when he ended up having an underlying reason for being friends with the Elliot family.

Favorite quote:
Both of our favorite quotes came from Captain Wentworth's letter to Anne.
K: "I have loved none but you."
Z: "You pierce my soul."

I hope you enjoyed this little Jane Austen review.  More to come as we move onto our second book..."Emma".

sunrise

Wednesday night I crawled in bed, reached over and set my alarm clock for 5am.

Say what?  Are you crazy Katie?  That is really early.

Oh, not quite.  You see, that's about the time the sun gets up.

Thursday morning, 5am, my alarm clock beeps and I get out of bed.  I grab a sweatshirt, a blanket, my cell phone, and my pepper spray.  (A true testimonial to my city girl-ness right there.)  I realized the night before that my camera had suddenly gone missing on me.  And I couldn't very well go searching around in a house full of sleeping people.  Let's just say it was a very frustrating few moments when I fully understood I wouldn't be able to take any pictures.  *sigh*  So, I grab my lawn chair, creak open the back door, and settle myself on the deck.

I pull out my prayer journal and write...

The sky is a light blue color.  Except in the east.  It's orange in the east.  I can see it peaking through the fence.
The birds are very much awake.  I used to think they were a nuisance.  I was definitely wrong...
It's really peaceful out here so early...
Thank You for creating beauty...like a sunrise.  It really is a pity not more people get up to watch it.

This whole event was inspired by a book I read.  "Love, Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli.  Anybody ever read it?  Well, I think it's a fabulous book.  This teenage girl, Stargirl, was different.  In a good way, in my opinion.  She cherished moments; especially the small ones.  Like watching the sun come up.

Live today.  Not yesterday.  Not tomorrow.  Just today.  Inhabit your moments.  Don't rent them out to tomorrow.  Do you know what you're doing when you spend a moment wondering about how things are going to turn out...?
You're cheating yourself out of today.  Today is calling to you, trying to get your attention, but you're stuck on tomorrow, and today trickles away like water down a drain.  You wake up the next morning and that today you wasted is gone forever.  It's now yesterday.  Some of those moments may have been wonderful things in store for you, but now you'll never know.

at work

We've been shifting in fiction lately.  After doing a lot of weeding, we decided to get rid of several paperbacks on the second floor, which opened up two whole bookshelves at the very back.  So, why not give ourselves some more space throughout the rest of the shelves and move everything back.  I'm on the shifting team.  Each of us try to do about three hours a week.  I had the privilege to move Jane Austen.  This may seem very trivial, but I found it neat to be able to give her books a new resting space on the shelves.
Every four hours an employee works, they get a fifteen minute break.  During one of my breaks not long ago I jogged up the stairs to the break room on the third floor.  The third floor is for employees only.  It makes me feel kinda special, that I can go up there.  Anyway, back to my break.  I gazed into the vending machine looking for something yummy to munch on.  Specifically, anything chocolate.  My eyes caught on some Reese's peanut butter sticks.  {Sidenote: Did you know they make them in sticks now?  Interesting.}  $1.00.  E6.  I slid my dollar in and punched in the buttons, but apparently my brain didn't do a very good job of communicating to my fingers.  I punched E5.  Oh no.  What was in E5?  I look down.  I was the new owner of.....beef sticks?  Ew.  Luckily I had an extra dollar to get my beloved Reese's sticks.  But what to do with the beef sticks?  Once again, ew.  I turned to one of the janitors who was cleaning the break room tables at the time.  "Charles, do you like these?  I accidentally pressed the wrong button."  He smiled, "Can't go wrong with beef sticks."  I handed them to him.  "You can have them."  He smiled again and said, "Thanks."  It was worth it then.  Even though my snack had ultimately cost me two whole dollars, I had made somebody happy with my beef sticks.  That was a great thing.
Read any good books lately?  Right now I'm reading one that I read as a middle schooler.  It was on my reading list, and I ended up really enjoying it.  So much that I can recall bits and pieces of the story to this very day.  I decided, why not pick it up again?  It's called "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli.  Great book.
Well, I'm coming to the end of this post and not sure how to bring it to a close.  I guess I'll just say, thank you.  Thank you dear readers for reading my idle chatter.

Yours,

new obsessions

Before I start this post, let me just say...I know I am way late.  Many of you, I'm sure, got hooked on these things a long time ago.  But, bear with me.  Just let me ramble on about how awesome they are if you will. ;)

the hunger games
I first heard about this book a couple years ago.  And, I've gotta admit, I judged before I read.  "Kids killing other kids?!  Say what?"  But, when the movie started getting big, I watched the trailer and thought, "Hmm...I might actually like this."  Like a typical book nerd, I had to read the book before I went to see the movie.  A fellow co-worker let me borrow the first one...and, my entire family can vouch for me, it was like I disappeared for three days.  I was hooked.

Annie and I went to see the movie a couple days later for her birthday.  I think they did a super job.  But, also typical book nerd, I liked the book better.

So, I know the question you're all asking... Peeta or Gale?  Well...despite the fact that I'm sure every girl in the entire world is a Peeta fan, I am too.  I can't help it.  Haha!  What about you?

I have yet to read book two.  I think I may wait awhile.  No need to disappear again, eh.  Plus, I'm like number 30 in the hold list at the library.

~~~
downton abbey
I heard a lot about this show before I ever watched it.  It was circulating at work and I was reading about it on the internet so, I put myself on hold for season 1.  Annie and I set down to watch it one night and, wow, I loved it!  It wasn't really what I expected...it was better.
Favorite character?  Mine is probably different than most of yours.  But that's okay.  I really like Mr. Bates.  He is just such a nice guy.
I have season 2, after much patience, but have yet to start it.  I can't wait to see what happens next!
~~~

Since we're talking about obsessions...I'm going to throw in this music video that I love.  I drive my brother crazy by playing it over and over again in the car.  Great song!

Okay, I want to hear from you.  Any new obsessions?  Do you share any of mine perhaps?

"Heaven Is For Real"

"Heaven Is For Real" is an incredible book about a little boy's journey to heaven and back.  His dad, Todd, tells his story.

The first time I saw this book was on vacation in a Barnes & Noble bookstore.  I picked it up, read the back, and immediately decided I needed to put myself on hold for this book at the library when I got home.  Well I did and I was about 6th or 7th in line for it.

When it finally came in, I reluctantly gave it up to my mother who requested to read it first.  I was, after all, in the middle of another book at the time.  I ended up finishing my book about a day later and picked up "Heaven Is For Real" to start on my break at work.  Well, let's just say I was mesmerized for about a day and half.  *Shhh!*  Don't tell my mom.... I took breaks during school to read.  *sheepish grin*

I don't want to give too many spoilers, but the Sunday after we sang two songs in church that have a profoundly different meaning to me now: "It Is Well With My Soul" and "You're Beautiful" (Phil Wickham).

"And Lord, haste the day, when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend
Even so, it is well with my soul"

"I see Your face, You're beautiful, You're beautiful, You're beautiful
I see Your face, I see Your face..."

This book is a must read in my opinion.  It left me with no doubts, a strong, renewed faith, and a longing for the day I'll someday be in Heaven hanging out with Jesus.

Has anyone else read this book?  Thoughts?

I am a book lover.

I am a book lover.

And I've been told by people before that if I wasn't set out to be a nurse then I'd be great working in a library.

So, this summer, I decided to send in an application to the public library in my city.

On Thursday I got a call.  When the person on the other end said, "You've got a job" I knew I was blessed.

Why?

Because I have the opportunity to not only pursue one, but two careers that I love.

"Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart." --Psalm 37:4

Good-bye Break!

Hi!  It's good to be back!

I'm waving at you all through my computer screen!  Haha, I literally did. ;D

I had a really good two week break.  I will admit, though, I had to break it a couple times to get on facebook.  I had to contact some people.  It was with my parent's permission though!  I wasn't like rebelling or anything.  Hehe ;)  But, I was really kinda proud of myself.  I stayed off blogger the whole time. :)

So, what'd I do for two weeks with zero to very limited Internet access?  ....
  • Annie's birthday!  She turned 14 on the 2nd.  (Her b-day post will be coming soon.)
  • Reading.  I finished two books over the break and I'm almost done with a third.
  • Writing.  I'm really glad I was able to write these past two weeks.  My sister and I even did some brainstorming and came up with new cool ideas for my story. :)
  • School & work.  Eh.  The not so fun stuff, but I was able to concentrate on them better.
  • Hanging out with friends.  On Tuesday we went to the movies and on Friday we had a cook-out party at my house.  It was SO much fun!
Well...I must conclude my little post now.  Today also happens to be finals day at school.  So I gotta go study.
It's good to be back.  I'll write soon. :)
